Steam Caching Proxy - Possible Bandwidth solution

I've already mentioned to this to Wes and I know he's looking into it, just wanted to see if it's something people would be interested in seeing at the LAN.

We've all been there. You're at the LAN ready to get your frag on and Steam drops a massive patch, slowing the Internet to a trickle as everyone's clients automatically start updating. People start losing connection to Steam, most games become unplayable and it's a giant mess.

Enter Valve SteamPipe reverse proxy. It caches Steam content so that instead of pulling each update 100+ times, we download it once to the server and everyone gets it from there. I honestly think this could massively improve the network issues we've had at the last few events.

epic.ELEVEN (274-man LAN) used it successfully here:
www.reddit.com/r/lanparty/comments/1jb49...proxy_traffic_graph/

Here's setup info for Ubuntu server:
www.astrolox.com/2013/05/31/valve-steampipe-reverse-proxy/

Here's a download link for Ubuntu server:
www.ubuntu.com/download/server

What do you guys think? Is this something you'd be interested in seeing at LanOC?

I've been trying to help him a bit with troubleshooting it today. I think we're pretty close to getting it working.

Um.............................PST.................................Hey.................

OMG I HAVE IT WORKING!!!!!! (at least i got it to download a game to the cache server)
Still have to test to make sure it is serving those files up to local clients.

Thanks to Dreyvas for the assist as we picked our way thru it.

On a side note - it is not as easy as all those forums post make it out to be. I will spare the technical details for now but I am pretty sure I have it working.

I am the LAN!!!!

I'm going to loan him my Steam account so he can get all the tournament stuff + most popular LAN games preloaded.

Didn't have a single major network problem the entire event that I noticed. No problems connecting to Steam and the Internet was even a fairly decent speed considering the number of users. I don't remember the last event we had that was that smooth from a network perspective.

Awesome.

Good job, Sideout.

I'm sure traffic shaping had a lot to do with this as well. Good stuff.
