way overkill for a media server. I would skip the ssd and the i5 build and go with a dual core atom build or a low end amd mini itx setup. Will you be using this just to host files or as an htpc?

I got my server from HP. Loving it so far, runs Windows Home Server. Pretty nice to access your media/files on the go.

I paid $600 plus drives for mine. You don't need that i5. I have a Pentium dual core and 2gb RAM in my machine. I don't think you need a server to play Crysis, lol. And you don't need an SSD. Also watch out for WD drives with Windows Home Server, they don't like the Advanced Format that the WD drives use. In my machine the drives wouldn't even show up. Had to get Seagate drives :(.

htpc/file backup

never seen an itx yet might look that up but i am also building for the long haul not for a couple month use so i see the i5 as the better buy as for the ssd i threw that in there just cause i really don't need it lol. but other than the cpu/ssd does it look good.

I too have a WHS machine. It runs great with an AMD Sempron 3100, and 1.5GB RAM.

I LOVE IT!!!

I understand your worrys about using it in the future. You can go with the i5 if you want, it is just WAY overkill. I really can't talk though. I use 3k dollar pc just for downloading and storing tv shows lol

I would put a 4 SSD's in Raid 0 and call it a day. That thing would be stupid fast!

Sure, then also put in the i7 975 Extreme, 2 GTX 480s, and 32GB RAM. THEN call it a day! ;)

Not sure if you need the 4gb of RAM but everything else looks good. How much is that X2, just wondering.

So what are you doing with this thing? Just throwing media out around your house or backing up to it?

If your backing your stuff up you need more than 1 drive

If you are just wanting to put media somewhere were it can be accessed from anywhere I would get a bigger drive than that. You don't really need to worry about speed and the 2TB WD Green drives are cheap.

That is just me though, I have a thing for WD drives.

Whatever you do, take some pics of it for us. Build logs are always cool no matter what it is.

Looks good to me.
I agree with Wingless. You do need more than one drive. As cheap as they are anymore, you might as well fill all the empty bays with 2TB drives.

A quick question... what OS are you planning on running on your media server?

WHS does an excellent job, and the new verison that is due out soon will be able to support thoes fancy EARS drives that Wingless warned you about as well as full DLNA compliancy, remote web access, full system backup and much more.

Both Wingless and I have WHS, so if you have any questions in particular about that system, feel free to ask away.

I am getting ready to rebuild my WHS in anticipation for the new version.

Yeah, the current version has VERY minimal sys reqs.
I use a repurposed E-machine.

1.8GHz Sempron
1.5GB RAM

What you really need is storage! Fill every bay with the largest hard drives you can afford!

WHS2 has higher requirements though.
